April 2026

Well, it has been a few months since our last udpate.  This is the time of year when things "shift" from our school-year programs into our summer camp activities.  We trust the following update will be an encouragement for you, and provide you with some things that you can pray for as we set our sights on the summer...

Released Time transition...

Our final Released Time classes have all wrapped up for this year!  This was our fifth year of Released Time classes here in West Michigan.  We began in the 2021/2022 school year on the heels of COVID with just one school that would allow us to come in February, and just 3 students registered. The four years that followed have seen meager growth, with this year (our highest) seeing just 16 students registered. Education is very important to families in our area, and it has been a challenge to get families on-board with the idea of releasing their kids for offsite Bible classes during the school day, even just twice per month during the lunch hour.  After prayer and consultation with our leadership, we believe there is a better option available to us that would attract more students to Bible classes...

In May, we will begin the process of reaching out to school leadership to define what an after-school arrangement would look like.  We plan to offer weekly classes, and will begin with the schools with which we already have an established relationship.  We are thankful the opportunity given us by Michigan Bible Clubs to teach one of their classes in Hudsonville this year to see how they do things and to glean from their experience.  There is much work and planning to be done between now and this fall, so please pray for guidance, open doors, and a willingness on the part of parents to enroll their kiddos!

Book Club

Our book clubs have wrapped up for this school year.  We ended with The Light Princess by George Macdonald.  It tells the story of prince who sacrifices himself for a self-centered princess who loved no one except herself.  His sacrifice for her was what finally broke through her hard heart and transformed her. It was a great story to point kids towards the ultimate sacrifice given to us through Christ, who loved us "while we were still sinners" (Rom. 5:8).

This summer, we are equiping some of our parents who have been involved with the program to host book clubs of their own in their neighborhoods.  They will use books we have reviewed in the past, along with some discussion starters and activities.  The goal is to free us up this summer to prepare for summer camp, and to reach families that we might not otherwise reach.  Our hope is that some of these new families will join us in the fall for our school-year book clubs!

Mail-based Lessons / Volunteer Spotlight

We have had an increase in enrollment in our mail-based lessons thanks to the hard work of Melinda Gomer, who has taken on this facet of our ministry and enabled it to grow!  Melinda has previously helped in our Day Camp programs, serving the children of our volunteers who serve there.  Melinda and her husband Gary attend Lakeshore Baptist Church in Grand Haven.

Camp

Although a lot of ground work has already been laid, there is much to do in the next few months!  The recruiting for volunteers has begun, promotion is well underway, mailings are going out soon and online registration is live.  May begins the "nuts and bolts" planning where we hammer out details.  Our theme this year for our camps is "The Gardens of the Bible".  We will look at the Garden of Eden, the four soils, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Garden Tomb, and Christian Growth.  Pray that the gospel will penetrate the hearts of these students!

Our Adventure Camp this year is getting an upgrade!  We have the joy of working with a land owner, Phil, who has provided space for our camps, and has also used his ingenuity and problem-solving skills to bring some really fun and practical elements to our camping experience.  Last year, that ingenuity resulted in a large and sturdy shelter area where the campers ate their meals and gathered at various times during the days of adventure camp.

This year, not only is the shelter returning, Phil's ingenuity has provided a water tower!  Getting water to all our campers for drinking, hand-washing, cooking, cleaning and a quick cold shower has been a lot of work in past years - but no more!  Phil has designed and built a tower that will hold 275 gallons of water, complete with filtration and a gravity-fed shower enclosure!  There is also an experimental warming system designed to use the heat of the sun to circulate warmer water back into the blue tank pictured below.  The goal is to make the shower water temp a bit more comfortable for our campers.  We are excited to see how this "grand experiment" takes shape!

For those who didn't see the camp dates in our last newsletter, I've repeated them here.  We'd love to see your family join us!!!

Family updates....

On April 27, our daughter Tori and husband Cameron welcomed our fourth grandchild, Otto Martin Mueller, into their family!  Mom and baby are doing well!

Carla's parents have moved from Kalamazoo to Spring Lake!  We are so pleased to have them close by to provide them assistance as needed.

Brandon and Nayab are also moving from Denver, CO back to Michigan!!!  They are due to arrive on May 24th, and Brandon will be working for the summer as a worship leader at Grace Adventures in Mears while he pursues a role in a local church.  Nayab will also be working at Grace Adventures with the summer cabin leaders to provide counsel and support.

Financial Update

Our Dollar-a-Day challenge has been accepted by over 10 families so far!  Our goal is 25, so we are well on our way.  If you'd like to "accept" this challenge, simply visit www.continuetogive.com/cbmprojectmichigan to get started.  These gifts will help us fund our ministry goals for this year.  Here's our promotional flyer with a few more details...

Closing Thoughts

God is good!  Thank you for your ongoing prayers and support of our ministry! Please pray especially for our new after-school programs this fall: that God would multiply the reach of the gospel to school kids, and that he would provide the resources and volunteers necessary for these new clubs to thrive.
